STRAP FITTING 814359
Description: An almost complete post-medieval copper alloy and gilded strap fitting, dating to the 17th century AD. The fitting consists of a mount with two integral wire rivets still in place.
The mount, with a moulded front and flat at the rear, is a sub triangular or urn shape with upward and inward turned scroll cusps at the top, flanking a convex central extension of the main plate. A large copper alloy wire rivet is situated just behind and projects to the reverse, but is bent, while a shorter rivet projects inwards from near the base of the mount and is also now bent and missing its pointed end. The base of the mount tapers into a sub acorn knop. The mount is 35.55mm in length, a maximum of 24.32mm in width and 3.29mm thick. The whole of the front is gilded. The moulding is probably heraldic, with foliate decoration all around the edge and a face or crowned head facing front in the upper half of the plate. Below this are further raised features, perhaps intended to represent the body of the figure, or further foliate decoration.
It weighs 8.61g.
