BROOCH 813417
Description: An incomplete Roman cast copper alloy T shape brooch dating to the period AD 50-150. It is in two separate pieces. It is missing the pin and part of the catch plate. One wing appears to have old damage and is shorter than the other. The two pieces consist of 1) the head of the brooch and part of the bow (32.32mm in length in total) and 2) the rest of the bow, with forward facing foot and the attached remains of the catch plate (32.29mm in length). The brooch was, therefore, c64.61mm in length overall, and 34.56mm in width (across the wings). There is a head loop which is circular (c10mm in diameter) above a short plinth. Iron corrosion can be seen in the pin slot and at the end of the cylindrical wings. The bow is 11.66mm in width where it leaves the head and tapers to 4.71mm at the foot. The foot is a semi circular shape, c6.48mm in diameter. The catch plate begins from the inside of the bow 22.65mm above the foot, is sub triangular in shape and extends 5.95mm in from the back of the foot. Part of the pin curl remains.
The two pieces together weigh 10.71g.
