STRAP FITTING 812829

STRAP FITTING 812829
Description: A medieval (1250 - 1450) copper alloy folding strap clasp plate, missing the frame. It consists of a long rectangular sheet folded transversely back on itself at the centre, to create a front- and backplate of equal length around the missing strap bar of the frame. The long edges are slightly incurved and the plate is recessed at the fold (for the frame). Six globular-headed rivets (c.3.4mm diameter) adorn the front-plate, three just behind a groove flanking the fold and three flanking the short open end opposite the fold. The reverse of the rivets can be seen on the backplate, 1.8mm in diameter. Much of the original dark green patina is missing. The object measures 25.30mm long, 13.45mm wide, 2.88mm thick and weighs 3.92 grams. Several similar examples of folding strap clasps from London are illustrated in Egan and Pritchard (1991), p.118-9, figs.77-8.
