RIVET 811906
Description: A Medieval to Post-Medieval (1450-1800) sheet rolled copper-alloy rivet. It stands 43.9 mm high and weighs 3.24g. The shank narrows from 6.8 mm in diameter to 1.5 mm. The head measures 9.4x3.3mm.
The rivet is made from a kite-shaped piece of copper-alloy rolled into a cone. The top is flattened to form a head. The function for these objects is unclear but it is thought that they may have been used for repairing metal vessels.
Egan (2005, p.101) suggests that these were a later form a rivet, which took over from the Medieval folded staples in the late 15th to the mid to late 16th century and continued in use into the 18th century.
