BUCKLE 811851

BUCKLE 811851
Description: A copper alloy double loop trapezoidal buckle frame with pointed ends and punched decoration. The pin is missing although iron staining on the strap bar suggest where it rested. The strap bar has lobed protrusions at either end. The loops are trapezoid; the sides slope towards the strap bar and the ends are expanding outwards into triangles. It has a flat back and front with a bevelled outer edge. A line of punched annulets flanks the outline of the frame, with an additional single annulet on each lobed protrusion and a rosette formation at the centre of each outer edge. It measures 46.4x26.7x2.0mm and weighs 5.75g. Whitehead (2003) illustrates a similar buckle (p. 82, no.514), decorated in part with cresents rather than just circles, which he dates to c.1620-1680 AD. Also cf. SUSS-7DD2D1.
