DIVIDERS 806185
Description: A complete copper alloy post-medieval dividers probably dating between 16th and 18th century AD. The object is composed by two arms held together by the hinge at their top. Both arms are free to move and can make an almost 360 degrees circle around themselves.
The arms are broadly triangular shape in plan and taper from the top to the tip. They are rectangular shape in cross section and their upper surface is decorated with a series of notches going down through them. The internal side of the arm is undecorated and flat. From the top of each arm extends a semicircular bar. The bars are connected, in the upper part, by a single rivet which passes throug a central hole creating the hinge and allowing the mobility of the arms. One of the two halves of the hinge shows an additional small bar that is attached to the others through the rivet and projects up to the centre of the semicircular one, inserting itself into a 1.83mm slot.
When the dividers is closed the two arms fit one into the other and the semicircular bars of the hinge create a ring that is 30.41mm in external diameter and 19.37mm in internal diameter. Opening the arms the two semicircular bars slide one over the other allowing the movement.
The dividers measures 80.84mm in length, 8.98mm in width and 3.95mm in thick. The arms are 48.93mm in length and 6.62mm in width. The dividers weighs 34.75g.
