BUCKLE 804266

BUCKLE 804266
Description: A medieval (1250-1350) copper alloy single-loop oval buckle frame of Meols Type 11, with outside 'roller' edge on the frame. It is incomplete in so far as it is missing its pin and sheet metal 'roller'. Dark orange/ brown staining on the bar suggests the pin was made of iron. The outside edge is offset and oval in cross-section, flanked at either end with an expanded cone-shaped terminal. The axis bar is offset and narrowed. The outside edge is 22.3mm in length, the 'roller' area 10.1mm long. It measures 3.9x3.1mm in cross-section. The buckle measures 22.0x30.7mm (internal 15.1x26.1mm) and weighs 3.67g. The metal is dark green in colour with some pitting around the frame but not on the roller, suggesting the loss of the sheet metal was probably relatively recent. A similar buckle complete with plate illustrated in Egan & Pritchard (1991), p.77, fig. 46, no. 317 was found in a context dated c.1270-1350.
