COIN WEIGHT 779658

COIN WEIGHT 779658
Description: A medieval copper alloy circular uniface coin weight for a quarter noble (issued 1412-64). The weight has a double grooved border enclosing a punched crown above a fleur-de-lis. At the top of the lis a recessed circular area marks the centre of the weight, made when the flan was turned to the correct size (Withers & Withers, 1995; 34). This is also visible to the centre of the reverse, which is undecorated. The metal is dark green in colour with some pitting to both surfaces. The coin weight measures 12.6mm in diameter, 1.9mm in thickness and weighs 1.31g. According to Withers and Withers (ibid) this is an example of a group of "English weights made according to an Act of Parliament of 1421. Several punches for the crown and lis are known... Weights of this type probably ceased being made c.1471".
