HARNESS PENDANT 767115
Description: A medieval copper alloy horse harness pendant dating to the 12th or early 13th century. The pendant plate is an irregular oval in shape and the metal is heavily corroded and bent, with damage to the edges. The plate is 32.5mm wide, 25.7mm tall and 0.6mm thick. The suspension loop extends 16.4mm from the top of the plate in a triangular shape before turning 90 degrees where it has a central oval perforation measuring 4.2mmx1.5mm. No decoration is discernible on either face of the pendant, however it is likely to have borne a device and have been gilded. In total the pendant is 42.3mm tall and weighs 3.98g.
Early harness pendants of a similar type are illustrated in Ashley (2002) p.6, fig.6 for which the author suggests a 12th/13th century date.
