BUCKLE 766859

Description: A medieval to post-medieval (1350-1600) copper-alloy double oval buckle frame. It is incomplete in so far as it is missing its pin, but otherwise undamaged; there are traces of iron corrosion product on the pin bar and one of the outer edges on the front. The metal is a greenish grey colour. The frame measures 24.4mm long, 20.3mm wide and 2.7mm thick, and weighs 3.02g. The loops are oval; the outside edge of the loops is bevelled externally and the reverse of the frame is flat. The pin bar is slightly narrowed and triangular in cross-section. The buckle is small, which possibly suggests it was used as a shoe buckle. A similar example is illustrated in Whitehead (1996; no. 294), very broadly dated to 1350-1720. Similar entries on this database include HAMP-648583 and HAMP-6FC850.
