Description: A fragment of copper alloy frame from a purse bar, of late medieval to early post-medieval date (c. AD 1450 to AD 1550).
The purse frame is 'L' shaped in cross-section and has a curved shape. The outer arm of the L shape bends inwards towards itself when approaching the terminal. The other arm has a single circular perforation located just before the break.
The incomplete terminal consists of a bent and incomplete oval perforation.
Several similar purse frame fragments have been recorded on the PAS database, including: WMID-999A5A; WMID-D800B7; SF-F84CE0; PUBLIC-005611; LEIC-97C312; LIN-6FAEE6 and SF-A1A952. Williams comments that L shaped purse frames are commonly associated with Class A1 purse bars (long bars with attached frames) and should be considered to date from c. AD 1450 to c. AD 1550.
The purse bar fragment is 57.45mm in length, 8.95mm wide and 6.35mm wide, it weighs 8.03 grams.
