BROOCH 753247

BROOCH 753247
Description: A copper alloy Roman Colchester two-piece brooch, dating from the 1st century AD. Apart from the pin which is missing, the brooch is largely intact, although slightly bent. At the head of the brooch, a decorative ridge rises up and continues to the foot of the brooch. At the top of the ridge are two slightly raised ridges to either side. Along the edges of the front of the brooch are two raised ridges. The profile of the bow of the brooch is almost triangular and is bowed (the lower section of the bow is flattened). At the head of the brooch, arms extend out at either side which are semi-circular in profile. The arms are each decorated with two raised ridges next to the bow and two raised ridges at the end of the arms. At the head of the brooch, a band continues round to hold the spring mechanism in place. The lower brooch is decorated with zig zag decoration broadly running along two thirds of the brooch. The spring mechanism comprises a bar with a wire wrapped round to form the spring mechanism and this wire would have extended down the back of the brooch to form the pin. The catchplate which is intact extends back from the lower part of the bow and is decorated with a circle cut out of the centre and sub-triangular shapes cut out above and below. The brooch 45.15mm in length, 21.5mm wide, 11.0mm thick and weighs 6.68 grams
