VESSEL 750989

VESSEL 750989
Description: An incomplete copper-alloy vessel foot probably from a cauldron, skillet or ewer, of medieval or post-medieval date (1200-1800). The (old and worn) break is just above the transverse band at the ankle. The pot leg is D-shaped in cross-section at the break, with a smooth flat back, and a fluted front consisting of four ribs (or toes) of semi-circular cross-section, running to the foot from beneath the transverse band (which is also of semi-circular cross-section). Black deposits on the surface on the metal are probably the result of sooting. The leg measures 18.7x9.9mm at the break, expanding to 20.2x10.4mm at the bottom of the foot (which is slightly angled in profile). It is thicker and wider at the trasverse rib, 22.1x12.0mm. It measures 40.8mm in length and weighs 42.49g.
