BROOCH 749499

Description: An incomplete, bent copper alloy Roman Hod Hill type brooch dating to AD 43-75 C. The bow, catchplate, head and foot survive mostly but the pin is missing. The brooch is bent in half but measures 22.48mm in length, is 18.32mm maximum width, 3.00mm minimum width at the foot, 3.81mm thick and weighs 2.66g. The wings roll upwards and forwards to hold the iron axis bar, but only a fragment of the wings remain. Below the wings the brooch narrows to 6.55mm and then expands to the bow 8.89mm. Down the bow are three raised ridges, and at the bottom of the bow are two lugs, one bent forwards and the other bent backwards, before each is another longitudinal ridge. Below this the bow narrows and tapers to the foot of the bow further down. There is one horizontal ridge just below the bow. The foot is incomplete.
