Description: A copper alloy shield-shaped stud with heraldic decoration. The shield is pointed. At the back is a central circular-sectioned stud with a flared head. The face of the mount is decorated with blue enamel. Azure a bend (argent) cotised, two lions rampant (or). Date: Medieval - 13th to 14th century Dimensions: 17.16 mm x 13.72 mm x 8.30 mm Weight: 3.94 g The coat of arms is similar to that seen on a harness pendant recorded in database record SOM-745C69. Laura Burnett notes that "These are the arms of the De Bohun family, Earls of Hereford and Essex and were borne by several members of the family in turn. They were important landowners and many harness pendants with their arms have been recorded, examples on this database range from Northumberland to Cornwall." It is also similar to an heraldic stud recorded in database record NMS-3AA0F7 which also only has two lions instead of six.
