DRESS HOOK 724845

DRESS HOOK 724845
Description: An early post-medieval (1500-1600) copper alloy dress hook of Read Class E Type 5. The hook itself is bent slightly to one side. The dress hook is openwork and cast to resemble a looped rope, and in shape a trefoil with a trapezoidal loop extending from the two of the trefoil-loops. The hook projects from the third, curling beneath itself and narrowing to a sharp point. The reverse of the hooked tag is flat while the front has moulded decoration in the form of diagonal ribs along the length of the 'rope' which forms the loops. Where the trapezoidal loop extends is a flattened pellet to either side, apparently representing a knot. Beyond, along the two short edges of the trapezoidal loop, are three moulded ribs of 'tassel'. The dress hook measures 31.4mm in (slightly bent) length, 18.5mm in width and 5.2mm in depth. Without the hook, the plate is 1.6mm thick. It weighs 1.59g.
