STRAP FITTING 722700
Description: Incomplete cast copper alloy sword belt hanger with moulded foliate decoration. Part of the main plate and a fragment of one of the (usyually three) hooked mounts suspended from it. On the lower edge of the main mount is a pierced knop forming a loop for the suspension of the hooked mount. The main mount has an empty rivet hole above the loop. The mount is decorated with a foliate pattern.
This mount, along with the two other hooked mounts, would have hooked through the three integral suspension loops, thereby attaching the sword belt to the sword scabbard. These three hooked mounts were riveted on to a leather strap or sling that suspended the scabbard.
Read (2001) illustrates a similar sword belt hanger on page 43, fig.26, no.373, which is dated from the 16th century.
