STRAP FITTING 71372
Description: Incomplete copper alloy late medieval/ early post medieval strap end. It is very thin sheet metal and damaged through wear, missing edges around the rivet-end and the end opposite. It has two rivet holes, both of which are worn through, and a second backplate is also missing.
The decoration is incised and appears to be the head of a ?duck/ bird with open beak and large pointed-oval eye, lying among rushes. However, the body consists of half a curved area with leg stretching downwards and tail outwards, to the break, which is rather unbird-like.
The decoration is remarkably to a buckle plate from Tetsworth, Oxfordshire, WILT-4B0097, depicting a two-headed beast.
48x16mm (and slightly bent).
