STEELYARD 71367

STEELYARD 71367
Description: Fragment of Roman copper alloy steelyard arm, probably. It is 21mm long, 11mm wide and 2.5mm thick with a loop of 11mm diameter (4.5x6mm internal). On one side, an area 2x9mm and 0.5mm in depth has been removed from the edge of the fragment. The patina is dark green and pitted. At first glance, this is very similar to a Roman miniature votive axe, copying the Bronze Age types on a miniature scale. However, the breaks at either end of the 'blade' do not follow, and the loop is slightly large. The loop is also badly worn, and almost worn through suggesting it was either suspended or a heavy weight was suspended from it.
