PADLOCK 710611

Description: An incomplete copper alloy medieval (AD c.1200-c.1400) padlock probably from a casket, missing its bow. Overall, it measures 43.0mm long, 10.4mm wide and 22.4mm thick. It weighs 10.63g. The stem is hollow and is hexagonal in cross-section. The stem is decorated with a pair of circumferential grooves at each end. The area inbetween is decorated on each of the upper three sides with a pair of longitudinal lines created using punched triangular dots. Above the bit on one side of the stem is a circular perforation. At the bow end on the bottom edge of the opening is a rectangular slot. The bit is rectangular and terminates with a longitudinal bar which projects slightly at either end. There is no obvious break at the bow end and there are no traces of a bow.
