BROOCH 704909

Description: A late Iron Age/early Roman copper alloy Colchester one-piece brooch dating to AD 25-60. The brooch is incomplete and is missing the pin and catchplate. At the top the bow has the remnants of the wings which originally extended to each side covering the spring. The wings appear to be incomplete. Behind the wings, there is a central piece which extends up and over the top of the wings and has a hole through which the spring wire passes. Below this at the back of the wings, there is a further section below the upper spring catchment which extends back and curls round twice to form part of the spring mechanism. There is a second curled section which is not attached to the brooch and presumably formed part of the spring mechanism as well. The rest of the spring mechanism passes through the loop at the top and then curls twice at each side. The spring mechanism is truncated and the pin is missing. The bow curves forward and down from the wings and gradually narrows to a sharp point. The catchplate is missing.
