NAIL CLEANER 658892

NAIL CLEANER 658892
Description: An incomplete Roman copper alloy nail cleaner, with several elements in common with Crummy's type 2b, dating to the 2nd and 3rd centuries. It is missing the tip of the bifurcated end. The body of the nail cleaner is triangular in shape with incurved long edges and wide, rounded shoulders (16.66mm wide and 4.30mm thick). Rising from the shoulders is the shaft, oval in cross-section (5.71mm wide) and expanding in thickness, in line with the body, from its damaged tip to the point where the loop extends. The shaft is max.5.11mm thick. The loop is in the same plane as the body and measures 11.44mm in diameter (internal diameter 6.62mm), and narrows from 4.78mm where is joins the shaft to 1.90mm at the opposite edge. The shaft is decorated apparently to the sides and 'front' only, with incised concentric lines. Possibly they have worn away to the 'reverse' as they are just visible at the edges. The body of the nail cleaner is pointed-oval in cross-section and decorated to one side (the 'front') with a single groove running from the base of the shaft to the old break (which measures 3.05x1.44mm). The nail cleaner is similar in form and decoration to a less-complete example on this database, DUR-58D3F3. The object measures 53.05mm in incomplete length, 16.66mm in max.width and 5.11mm in max.thickness. It weighs 6.03g.
