UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT 642137
Description: A copper alloy, apparently incomplete, unidentified object of probable late medieval to early post-medieval date (c.1400-1700). It has worn breaks (old-ish) at either short end of the object, which is rectangular in shape and curving in profile. It measures 90.11mm in length, 16.91mm in max.width (roughly the mid-point of the object) and 5.43mm thick (also roughly mid-object). It weighs 41.74g. The object is slightly narrower to one short end (11.55mm) than the other (12.92mm). Both show an oval cross-section. Flanking either end is a transverse groove. The area between is decorated with three longitudinal grooves, equidistant to each other but slightly offset within the object itself as one of the outer grooves lies close to one of the outside long edges of the object. This edge has crenellation along just over half of its length, from the wider of the short ends. The crenellations have been extra-emphasised with a deep V-shaped groove. Beyond the last crenellation, a smaller transverse groove is visible in the edge, roughly where another crenellation might be expected. To the reverse, which has no decoration, are multiple tooling marks, particularly dense along the long edge opposite the crenellated edge. The object is asymmetrical in shape. The decorated face is convex, while the reverse is concave. The profile of the object is also asymmetric. The patina, where it survives, is a dark green in colour, smooth and shiny. However concretion possibly from corrosion is apparent over c.30% of the surface.
