BROOCH 633347

Description: A copper alloy enamelled Roman disc brooch dating to the period c. AD 80 - 200. The brooch is missing part of the pin but is otherwise intact. The disc is circular and is decorated with a series of concentric circles, the outermost of which is a plain border which is slightly scalloped on it's inner edge surrounding a groove which retains traces of red and blue enamel. This is followed by a circular plain border surrounding a circular groove containing traces of alternating red and blue enamel within which sit seventeen raised regularly spaced pellets. There then follows a thicker plain birder with a central circular depressing measuring 6.83mm in diameter which may have held a stone or enamel setting. There is a small, irregular perforation which is probably a result of old damage. The brooch is also slightly dished as a result of having been bent out of shape. The reverse is plain and undecorated. It features an intact catchplate directly opposite two lugs which house the pin bar, visible as a patch of iron corrosion between the two lugs. The spring of the pin is in situ and terminates in an old break. The brooch is similr in design to Hattatt, R, 2007, pp. 344, fig. 203, no. 1564A.
