BUCKLE 628044
Description: An incomplete silver Post Medieval (c.1660-1720) double-oval buckle frame with anchor-shaped chape and pin. The outside edge of one loop is missing.
The buckle is decorated with a groove defining the edge of each loop and a shallow ledge beyond. The surviving loop has a convex projection at the centre of the inside edge, decorated with seven horizontal grooves. The frame is drilled for a separate spindle, which is also silver. The frame at this point has a curving decorative groove to either side of the spindle. The pin is D-shaped in cross-section and triangular in form, possibly damaged at its tip. The chape has an openwork heart-shape with a maker's mark stamped below. The maker's marks consists of the letters 'EC' or 'FC' with a pellet in between the letters, a crown above the letters with a pellet on each side and a possible pentagon shape below the letters.
The buckle is now bent out of shape but measures 26.10x23.55mm, the internal dimensions of the loop measuring 8.29x17.23mm. It weighs 7.56g.
Similar buckles are illustrated by Whitehead (1996: 98-99) who suggests they are shoe or knee-buckles and date from the late 17th to early 18th century. NCL-127F16 (2010 T467) on this database has similarities in the shape of the frame.
Consequently, in terms of age and precious metal content, the object qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
