STRAP END 618848

Description: A copper alloy Early Medieval (AD c.800-900) strap end. It falls into Gabor Thomas' (2003, 2) Class A Type 2: Patterned. It measures 50.60mm long, 17.50mm wide and 3.90mm thick. It weighs 8.85g. The strap end has convex sides, a zoomorphic terminal with a rounded point, and a wider split end with two copper alloy (possibly tinned) rivets. The front surface is decorated with an engraved pattern of entwined plants or snakes (two larger and two smaller) around a vertical column or tree, within a border which follows the shape of the object. The zoomorphic terminal is moulded and represents an animal head with large round ears. At the other end, the rivets may form the eyes of another zoomorphic head, with the nose and mouth represented by engraved lines below. The surface has possibly been silvered. The reverse is flat and undecorated.
