BROOCH 597285
Description: A fragment of a medieval lead annular brooch, consisting of a decorative lozenge boss (one of probably two or four) with part of the curving frame attached to the reverse. It measures 24.50mm in length, 23.60mm in width and 3.30mm in thickness, weighing 3.73g.
Three of the corners have signs of breaks. The curving ridge on the reverse connects two opposing broken corners. Decoration on the front face consists of a raised ridge border following the shape of the object. Within this is a lozengiform border of eight circles with raised edges and at the centre is a lozenge with raised edges.
Such brooches in lead are presumably cheap copies of those more usually found in silver gilt and copper alloy. For a complete (but much smaller) annular brooch frame of lead on this database, see SUR-D61672; for another fragment of lozenge boss, see NMS-23DC84. Examples of annular brooches excavated in London are from contexts dated between 1270 and 1400. Cf. Egan and Pritchard, nos 1320-1333.
