BUCKLE 597146
Description: A copper alloy Post Medieval (c.1660-1720) sub-rectangular shoe buckle, with a drilled frame for a separate spindle. Overall it measures 51.45mm long, 29.40mm wide and c.11.35mm thick. It weighs 12.93g. The frame is sub-rectangular, measuring 41.35mm in length and 4.30mm thick.
The frame is sub-rectangular in plan with bevelled inner edges and slightly concave long sides. Decoration consists of three moulded circular concave fronted knops at the centre of each end of the frame. The single tongue, pin and stud chape are all still present. The tongue has a maker's stamp on the front which is very worn but consists of what appears to be GH in a rectangular cartouche.
This buckle is a Marshall (1986: 17-18) type V buckle and due to the large size and curve was probably used as a shoe buckle. For similar examples see Whitehead (1996) Buckles 1250-1800, 98-103, no.609-663.
