MOUNT 590352

Description: A copper-alloy post-medieval hooked mount dating to the 17th century. At the top is a circular roundel (8.25mm wide) with a circular perforation in it (probably for a rivet) and a small knop at the very top. Below this is a collar which connects the knop to the main body of the mount. The main body takes the form of a subcircular plate (25.80mm wide), which extends at the bottom to form a narrow neck with a two ridged collar connecting it to the hook. The hook projects forward at a 45-degree angle and then curves backwards and then towards the top of the mount so as to form an almost complete circle. Except for the hook and two ridged collar, the mount is flat. The main body has incised decoration on the front which takes the form of a symmetrical four petalled flower with stalk and leaves below. There is also an incised border along the edge of the curving sides. The reverse is undecorated but has an integral rivet projecting near the two rid Overall the mount measures 55.05mm in length. The top section from the top knop to the base of the top collar measures 10.20mm in length. The main body measures 29.30mm in length. The two ridged collar is 3.65mm long, 8.70mm wide, 4.25mm thick. The hook measures 12.55mm in length, tapers in width from 4.90mm to 2.10mm and tapers in thickness from 3.70mm to 2.10mm. A similar hooked mount can be seen in Read 'Metal Artefacts of Antiquity' no.358.
