Description: Two early medieval silver sceats. One sceatta is a series X Type 31 variant Wodan/Monster type which exhibits a Metcalf/Barrett variety H obverse and L reverse. It dates to the period c. AD 710-740. The obverse features a facing Wodan head with flowing or radiant hair with a single pellet above and a beard, ears either side, and pellets in the beard surrounded by a beaded outline. The reverse features a design of a crested monster facing right with a type L shaped head in flight looking left over its shoulder with pellets below the head raised triple tail, claws below and a prominent member all surrounded by a beaded outline. Mint of Ribe, Denmark.
The second sceatta is a series H type 49 Metcalf variety 1b dating to the period c. AD 720 - 740. The obverse features a centrally positioned small moustached round face with a beaded outline surrounded by nine roundels. The reverse features a crested peacock displaying right with roundels above and below and pellets behind and beneath. Mint of Hamwic (Southampton).
Dimensions: The series H sceatta measures 12.20mm in diameter, 1.79mm in thickness and weighs 0.91g.
Discussion and Date: As these coins are more than 10% precious metal, are more than 300 years old and come from the same find they constitute potential Treasure under the terms of the Treasure Act 1996.
