Description: An apparently complete, though with some damage, post-medieval silver "bosun's" whistle dating to the 17th century. It consist of a slightly tapering sheet tube with an applied transverse triple-rib at the centre, an elaborate openwork S-shaped handle below, and an egg-shaped hollow at the narrower end of the tube, also attached to the handle. The S-shaped handle is foliate in design and attached with solder to the underside of the tube and the hollow end. It is max.3.36mm thick. The tube narrows from 4.57mm in diameter (internal 3.60mm) to 3.96mm diameter (internal uncertain) and leads straight onto the hollow egg-shape. Set at an angle above the tube the hollow has a circular opening c.5.4mm in diameter. The egg-shaped element measures 22.73mm in width and 17.90mm in diameter, with a 2mm thick, 2mm high ridge running around the centre. Both hemispheres are decorated with an openwork raised rib nonafoil and a projecting boss-like pellet at the centre. Dimensions: Length 44.64mm, max.width 22.73mm and height 19.73mm. Weighs 8.21g.
