THIMBLE 565607

THIMBLE 565607
Description: An incomplete and squashed Early Post-Medieval (1600-1700) silver thimble formed of sheet silver c.0.5mm thick. It is missing its domed top which would have been made separately and soldered into place. The ends of the sheet metal would also have been soldered to form a continuous circle but the seam is now spilt. The thimble is decorated with tightly grouped rows of annulets above a row of beading which flanks the bottom edge. The bottom edge has an additional band made from sheet silver 1mm wide, now coming away from the walls of the thimble. Above the line of beading and to one side of the split edge is a rectangular area empty of decoration with the initials AE, or possibly AL, and probably followed by another letter or symbol now lost through wear. It measures 15.63mm in height, 23.33mm in squashed max.width (min. squashed width at the top of the walls being 16.42mm) and weighs 2.78g.
