COIN 534511
Description: A worn and bent Post-Medieval Irish silver sixpence of James I (AD 1603 - 1625), first issue coinage, initial mark: bell (AD 1603-04). Measures 23.28mm, weighs 2.09g.
Although this is an Irish coin it is suggested that all issues were produced in London so as to provide the realm with a uniform currency, but the Irish sixpence was smaller than its English counterpart and had a value in England of four and a half pence. It is easily identified by a large crowned harp found on the reverse and was struck in good quality silver of 0.925 fineness.
The coin is bent in two places, giving an 'S' shape when viewed in profile. Coins are often found bent in such a way and it is suggested they might have been given as love tokens.
