BUCKLE 509753

BUCKLE 509753
Description: A broken and incomplete cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle frame of post-medieval date. The frame was formed of a pair of 'Ds'; one has been largely lost as a result of old damage. Knops in the form of human heads at each end of the pin bar extend beyond the frame; the pin is missing. There is also a knop at each of the frame's extant corners. The lower surface of the buckle is flat, while the upper surface is elaborately moulded and slightly bevelled both internally and externally. There is a barrel moulding on the surviving outer edge. The corner knops are the terminals of moulded scrolls. Between them and the pin bar is a central transverse double ridged moulding. An almost identical buckle frame can be found illustrated in Whitehead (1996, 68; ref. 427), with others on this database, e.g. ref.: HAMP-0109D5. The buckle has a dark-green patina where it survives; the corroded areas are lighter. Viewed in profile one can see that the buckle has been twisted as well as broken.
