BUCKLE 509747
Description: A cast copper-alloy double-looped annular buckle with moulded floral decoration, incomplete in so far as it is missing its pin. The buckle is broadly in the form of a five-petalled flower, with the moulded petals irregular sizes, and one more straight than cusped. The petals seem to be plain although the artefact is corroded. The pin bar is central and trapezoidal in cross-section. Iron corrosion product around its centre, as well as on the outer edge between two petals, reveals that the pin was made of iron. The lower surface of the artefact is flat and plain; the upper surface is bevelled internally and externally. Similar buckles can be found illustrated in Whitehead (1996, 47; refs. 272-274) and Margeson (1993, 29; ref. 157), where they are dated to the late medieval/early post-medieval periods. This buckle is now a dull mid/dark-grey/green colour with large patches of light-brown corrosion product.
