STRAP FITTING 509732

STRAP FITTING 509732
Description: A flat sheet copper-alloy lozengiform mount (strap fitting) of medieval date. The upper surface is decorated with an incised rockerarm saltire within a lozengiform border. There are two rivets holes located just above the horizontal division of the mount. The artefact now has a variable green patina largely overlying dull red-brown colour metal. A mount with this decoration can be found illustrated in Read (2001, 17; ref. 124), although it is thought safer to offer a wider date range than that suggested by the author. A similar artefact is depicted in Bailey (2004, 95; ref. 12.14) and is described as a hooked fastener missing its hook. This might be a plausible identification for this example, particularly given that the concretions and ?solder on the lower part of the lower surface might suggest a missing hook.
