JETTON 499720

JETTON 499720
Description: A very worn and corroded, pierced 16-/17th-century copper-alloy post-medieval jetton of uncertain issuer of an allegorical type, 'FORTVNA VARIABILIS' legend, probably struck in France under Charles IX (c. 1560 - c. 1574 AD). The coin has been pierced through the reverse presumably for reuse as a jewellery item. The piercing is at around 11 o'clock on the obverse, and around 1 o'clock on the reverse. The 'FORTVNA VARIABILIS' legend is found on jettons of Hans Krauwinckel II (1586-1635 AD) but the design is inverted compared to this piece. There is no obvious signature of Hans Krauwinckel hence the suggestion that this is a French issue, the design being popular on jettons of Charles IX (1560-1574 AD). The combination with the 'STVDEAT VIRTVTI' reverse is noted by Mitchiner (1988, 454).
