BUCKLE 499329

BUCKLE 499329
Description: A slightly corroded and bent cast copper-alloy post-medieval double-looped buckle frame of asymmetrical form. One loop is broadly rectangular while the other is D-shaped. The former has two curved removals on its outer edge; the edge is delineated by a transverse incision on the upper surface. The rounded end of the other loop is also slightly expanded. It is slightly rabbeted at its outer edge; within this is pair of diagonal incisions that delineate the moulded centre. The upper surface is bevelled shallowly from the internal edge to the external, bevelling paralleled internally on the lower surface. The pin bar is slightly narrowed; the pin is missing. The artefact has been bent around the pin bar at a slight angle which is perhaps a product of use rather than damage. Such buckles tend to be attributed a 17th-century date (cf. Whitehead 1996, 91; ref. 571). This artefact has a yellowy/brown colour; it appears to have been cleaned recently.
