BROOCH 496513
Description: An incomplete Roman (AD 50-150) copper alloy T-shaped brooch of Dorset type, with a damaged chain loop (missing about half). The pin is intact and moveable. Measures 35.02mm long and weighs 4.37g. The 24.39mm wide wings are tubular (max.3.77mm diameter) and decorated to the front with a pair of transverse grooves flanking either end. To the reverse, the pin measures 1.46mm in diameter and has a triangular head. To the front the bow (6.70x1.89mm) extends at 135° to the top of the wings, and the broken chain loop (6.74mm wide) projects above. Its internal piercing measures at least 4.12mm in diameter. Less than half survives. The upper bow drops then drops at almost 90° and narrows from 5.90x2.45mm to 5.26x2.11mm at the join with the lower bow. The upper bow is decorated with a central rib and rocker arm decoration on either side on panels sloping slightly inwards to the rib. The lower rib measures 5.15mm wide and narrows to 3.46mm just above the foot. Between are five moulded transverse ribs. The foot is semi-circular in shape and projects forwards 2.6mm. The brooch has a smooth, shiny green patina. Cf. Hattatt no.923.
