BUCKLE 447250

BUCKLE 447250
Description: A corroded, incomplete cast copper-alloy asymmetrical double-looped buckle frame probably of post-medieval date. The frame is formed of a pair of 'Ds' that meet at the pin bar; the pin is missing. On the upper surface the frame is bevelled round the outer edge, bevelling echoed internally on the lower surface. One loop is broader (7.25mm) and plainer than the other. It is slightly ridged internally, and rebated externally. The other loop (W.: 4.6mm) has a central groove that would have acted as a pin rest. To each side of the groove are large moulded areas decorated with incised diagonal lines on their upper surface. Further grooves divided theses from moulded areas before the pin bar. Just before the pin bar this loop has been fractured at one end. The frame has a cross-section of the form of a triangle with rounded corners, with the pin bar more of a trapezoidal cross-section. The frame has corroded to a variable mid-green colour. Viewed in profile one can see that the pin bar is distorted after strikes upwards and downwards. This buckle is difficult to parallel using the main reference works but a post-medieval date has been suggested.
