BROOCH 437134
Description: An incomplete Roman (AD 50-150) copper alloy Dolphin (or Colchester Derivative) brooch with hinge mechanism, missing its pin. It measures 56.12mm in length and weighs 8.55g.
The tubular wings span 20.41mm and iron concretion is apparent at the pin-slot, suggesting the axis bar was iron. The wings are decorated to the front with a double groove flanking each open end.
The bow extends from the top of the wings and projects at 90degrees in a slight hump, before dropping in a curve. Either side of the bow where it extends from the wings is a flanking diagonal moulding. The bow here is D-shaped in cross-section and measures 4.85x3.78mm. This narrows to 3.19x3.80mm just above the catchplate, which extends 13.04mm to the reverse which the bow narrows to 0.86mm at the foot.
