BUCKLE 420230
Description: An incomplete cast copper-alloy Late Roman (AD 330-410) buckle, missing its integral triangular plate and pin. The frame is kidney- or heart-shaped in plan, in that it is D-shaped but with a concave front edge. The incomplete buckle plate measures 19.95x31.94x4.34mm and weighs 8.34g.
The kidney-shaped frame measures min7.29mm, max.8.20mm by 22.88mm internally. The frame is square-ish in cross-section. It has broken at its join with the plate, against the straight edge. Behind is a T-shaped openwork area (for the pin) and at either corner a broken 'loop', consisting of a probable rounded area with a piercing c.3.3mm diameter at the centre.
The metal has a smooth dark brown patina and the breaks are jagged and probably old.
