BUCKLE 408760

Description: A cast copper-alloy shoe or knee buckle of post-medieval date (17th century), incomplete in so far as it is missing its pin. The buckle is sub-rectangular in form, with openwork perforations in each corner broadly in the shape of circles. Between the openwork corners each outer edge features a transverse groove on their upper surface; the lower surface is entirely plain. The frame is steeply internally and externally bevelled on the upper face. At each end of the pin bar, and extending beyond, is a group of three lobed protrusions, delineated by grooves. The pin bar would have been a separate spindle; both holes retain dark orange-brown corrosion. In profile the buckle is curved, a feature of its construction. Many buckles of similar form can be found in the literature (e.g. Whitehead 1996, 98; ref. 613) and on this database.
