FINGER RING 392999

FINGER RING 392999
Description: An incomplete Roman (AD 200-300) copper alloy and possibly tinned finger-ring set with a light-turquoise probably glass intaglio, missing the hoop below the shoulders. It measures 25.65x16.63x(max)5.76mm and weighs 7.82g. The bezel is pointed-oval in shape (22.98x15.37x4.12mm) set on a wider platform (max.width and 1.05mm thick) which extends to the shoulders (c.12.6mm wide) and presumably the rest of the hoop (now missing due to an old break). The shoulders are triangular in shape with a central raised and rounded triangular area which the pointed oval bezel projects into. The breaks at the bottom of the shoulders are 6.85mm and 6.37mm wide. The intaglio depicts a standing, facing stick figure with a club hanging downwards in its left hand, probably Hercules. The copper alloy of the finger-ring has a dull silvery sheen in places, suggesting it may have originally been tinned. Cf. SOM-344F94 for finger-ring of the same shape and set with a similarly 'stick' figure glass intaglio, though of not as unusual a colour as the turquoise glass of this example.
