WEIGHT 387893

WEIGHT 387893
Description: An undatable lead weight, probably Medieval in date, conical in shape and ocatagonal in cross-section with faceted sides. It measures 45.15mm in length and weighs 107.24g. The base measures 20.09x18.30mm and this narrows over c.35.5mm to 16.46x16.67mm. Here is a flat top with a 7.52mm wide loop extending from one side to the other. The piercing is 3.76mm in diameter. Cf. a similar, hexagonally-sectioned weight on this database, WILT-ECEC12. Lead weights are difficult to date when found as stray finds, as they are used for long periods of time. Similar weights are illustrated in Biggs, p.41 and are described as 'standing weights' that appeared in the 12th or 13th centuries with the integral suspension loop probably used for safe keeping. This form of weight is distinguished from steelyard weights due to the fact that it is designed to be freestanding.
