STRAP END 384653

Description: An incomplete cast copper-alloy strap-end of Medieval date (1250-1400), missing one of its rectangular plates. It measures 19.68mm in length, 11.28mm in max.width/ diameter and weighs 5.84g. The strap-end has a globular end (11.28x10.88x10.46mm) from which extends a split attachment end formed of rectangular plates (one of which is missing). The surviving plate measures 8.40x5.45x1.31mm and has broken across the rivet hole at its end. The strap-end has lost its original patina and is brown/ purple in colour. Examples of this type of strap-end can be seen on this database (eg.HAMP-C88A50, SF-264006). Although probably Medieval in date, some are though to be Late Early-Medieval, perhaps as early as the 8th century AD (see for example NMS-A59A63, NMS-F1E456 or NMS-EFA978).
