COIN 309

Description: These appear to be of the late third century, Romano-British Barbarous Radiates. The smaller coins have not been struck (with the exception of one) - flans such as this are referred to as blanks. These have the characteristics one would expect of a blank - square edges and relatively thick in comparison to a struck coin. These flans are important as they may indicate a site of manufacture or the source of a counterfeiting during this period. Counterfeit coins were in circulation and it seems accepted by the Romans. There has been a hoard of such coins recently discovered in Norfolk. Huge quantities of coins were being produced at this time - in the main this was an attempt to boost the economy and win the loyalty of an army for the incoming rulers. The larger coins would also be of the third century - but these are only datable by the dimensions and weight and these are possibly unstruck.
