STRAP END 275749

STRAP END 275749
Description: Incomplete Medieval copper alloy sheet metal strap-end, folded widthways. Part of the backplate is damaged and missing. It measures 33.97x23.816.62mm and weighs 6.23g. Both plates have angled ends with a squat T-shaped projection at the centre. Three iron rivets just below this end have corroded badly onto the front plate, although all three remain in situ. To the reverse the backplate has broken around the rivets, causing the backplate to ‘spring up’ (where it is not held down). The folded end has a curved (and damaged) corner. Comparative examples in Egan and Pritchard (1991) date from the late 13th to the middle of the fifteenth century. Cf nos.578 to 587.
