HOARD 2657

Description: De Jersey (2015): "Coins were found by two detectorists between 6 May and 16 July 1979, apparently scattered across a wide area (up to 900 m2) within an earthwork. Excavation (PPS 40 (1980), 350) of a 5 m square area where most of the coins were said to have been found identified twenty holes dug by the detectorists, the deepest 0.35 m, but failed to find any more coins or "to clarify the nature of the deposit" (Haselgrove 1987, 314-5 no. 61). The significance of the find has been discussed in some detail (Burnett and Cowell 1988, 1-4; de Jersey 1997, 75-7). The staters of the Baiocasses consist of two types, one group bearing a lyre in the hair and beneath the horse (nos 1-28 in the list below; de Jersey 1994, 110, lyre variant b, now DT 2249), and the other with a boar in these positions (nos 29-43; ibid., 108, boar class I, now DT 2255). All of the lyre type staters are struck from the same reverse, and probably the same obverse die. The source of the quarter stater (no. 45) remains problematic, although it may be a product of the south-west (ABC 2148)."
