STRAP FITTING 199897

STRAP FITTING 199897
Description: 16th/ 17th century copper alloy sword belt fitting, consisting of the hooked plate and looped mount, unfortunately now in two pieces having broken at the join between loop and mount. The hooked plate measures 48.1x19.4x2.4mm. It is decorated with scrolled foliage and has two piercings 2.5mm in diameter with remains of iron rivets still within them. On the reverse, these piercings are countersunk with a max. diameter of 7mm. The end of the hook appears to be zoomorphic with an open mouth and brow ridge. The loop of the mount is 11.4mm in diameter (internal 6.8mm). The mount would have extended at circa 90° to the hooked plate and is incomplete. It has a 3.52mm diameter hole slightly off-centre which is surrounded by scrolled foliage decoration. The shape of the main part of the mount is not dissimilar to the hooked plate (albeit smaller), except that two arms extend, bent and broken, to one side. It measures 34.1x22.6x2.3mm. Weighs 13.86g. Cf. Read 2001 p.43 fig.26 no.373 for shape and decoration.
